Eating on Ambergris Caye is gloriously low-key: plastic chairs in the sand, a cold Belikin, and a snapper that was swimming this morning. This is a guide to the spots that locals and longtime visitors actually return to — on Secret Beach’s calm western shore, and in town — along with what to order and when. Island businesses change fast, so treat hours and names as "as of recent reports" and confirm on the day.
On Secret Beach: bars with your feet in the water
Secret Beach, on the leeward west side of the island, has grown from a single bar into a whole strip of them — most with tables in the shallows and a swim-up, no-shoes ethos. A few that consistently come up:
- Pirates Not IncludedA classic Secret Beach bar — tables in the water, tropical cocktails, all-day easy. The kind of place you settle into for an afternoon.
- Maruba Beach KlubOften called the most polished spot on Secret Beach, with a more upscale, Caribbean-flair menu. (Not to be confused with the older mainland Maruba jungle resort.)
- Blue BayouFamily-friendly and all-ages, dine-in or takeout — an easy lunch with the kids.
- Bamboo Fence & Swing BarEclectic local-and-international menu with swing-seat bar stools.
- The Original Secret Beach Bar & GrillThe namesake that helped start it all, plus newer neighbors like Aurora’s and Happy Island along the same shore.
For the most current rundown of what’s open where, longtime island bloggers like San Pedro Scoop and tacogirl keep the best running notes — Secret Beach turns over quickly.
In San Pedro: the kitchens islanders love
A short golf-cart ride away, San Pedro town has the island’s deepest bench of local cooking:
- Robin’s KitchenOutdoor local legend for jerk chicken and barbecue — smoky, generous, beloved.
- Estel’s Dine by the SeaA beachfront breakfast institution; the Sunday barbecue and the view are both worth it.
- Elvi’s KitchenA long-running San Pedro favorite for Belizean seafood and its Friday Maya-style buffet.
- El FogonTraditional Belizean dishes cooked over an open fire-hearth — deeply local.
- Waruguma & Neri’sGo-to spots for pupusas, big burritos, and cheap, excellent breakfast tacos.
- The Truck StopBelize’s first shipping-container food-truck park, on the road toward Secret Beach — family-friendly, with games and movie nights.
- CarambaLively, with pick-your-own fresh seafood from the cooler: ceviche, snapper, lobster in season.
What to order: a Belizean primer
Belize’s food is its own thing — a Caribbean, Maya, Mestizo, and Garifuna blend. Don’t leave without trying:
- Rice & beansThe national plate, cooked together with coconut milk — distinct from "beans and rice," served separately. Usually alongside stew chicken.
- Fry jacksPuffy fried dough at breakfast, with eggs, beans, and jam.
- Ceviche & conchConch fritters and conch ceviche when in season (see below).
- Fresh fishSnapper and grouper, grilled simply. After a fishing trip, our chef Delma will cook your catch.
- Salbutes & garnachesMestizo street snacks — fried tortillas with toppings.
- Marie Sharp’sThe iconic Belizean habanero hot sauce, on every table. Belikin is the national beer; One Barrel the local rum.
One only-in-Belize night out
The Chicken Drop is a San Pedro institution: a numbered grid, a wandering chicken, and good-natured betting on which square it, ahem, "drops" on — winner takes the pot. It has long been a weeknight tradition at Wahoo’s Lounge; the venue and night have shifted in recent years, so check locally for the current schedule. Silly, harmless, and very Belize.
A few practical notes
Most places are casual and cash-friendly (US dollars are accepted everywhere, with change in Belize dollars), though more spots take cards now. Getting around is by golf cart, including the partly unpaved run out to Secret Beach. In high season, book ahead for the more popular sit-down dinners. And remember the easiest meal of all is at home: at Black Orchid Oasis, breakfast is included daily and our chef and bartender can handle lunches, dinners, and cocktails — arranged through the Curate Your Stay form before you arrive.
