You can climb a Maya pyramid in the morning and be back on Ambergris Caye for dinner. Belize is small enough that the jungle is a day trip.

How the day works
The flight from San Pedro to Belize City takes about fifteen minutes. The villa is about forty minutes from the airstrip, so you leave Secret Beach around 5:45 a.m. for an early departure. A van meets you in Belize City, and you're back at the airstrip for an afternoon or early-evening flight. Our four-day and eight-day itineraries show where it fits in a week.
Altun Ha
Altun Ha sits in lowland forest about thirty miles north of Belize City. The pyramid on the Belikin beer label is its Temple of the Masonry Altars. The site is two plazas with thirteen structures, an hour or two on foot. It was a trading centre, and jade and obsidian came here from far away. The jade head of Kinich Ahau, found in a tomb in the Temple of the Masonry Altars in 1968, is still the largest carved jade object found in the Maya world. It isn't kept on site.
The walking is flat, there's shade, and the climbs are modest. It pairs easily with cave tubing at Nohoch Che'en, a river trip, or the Community Baboon Sanctuary at Bermudian Landing, where black howler monkeys come down to eye level. Xunantunich
Xunantunich (stone woman in Yucatec Maya) sits on a ridge above the Mopan River, about eight miles west of San Ignacio. You cross the river on a hand-cranked ferry at San José Succotz, and everyone has to get out of the vehicle for the crossing. The ferry is free; tip the ferrymen.
El Castillo rises around 130 feet above the plaza, among the tallest structures in Belize, with a stucco frieze of astronomical and dynastic imagery on its east and west faces. You can climb it, but the steps are steep, uneven and slick after rain. The top looks west into Guatemala and south toward the Mountain Pine Ridge.
Allow two to three hours. Confirm hours with your operator, as the ferry's window is narrower than the site's and isn't officially published. The small visitor centre is worth ten minutes. Go early: the plaza has no shade.
One site per day
The sites lie in opposite directions from Belize City, so doing both means about four hours in a van. With two mainland days, pair Altun Ha with cave tubing and give Xunantunich its own day, adding the ATM cave if your group is up for it. With one day, fit adults who want the climb should do Xunantunich; mixed ages do better with Altun Ha and tubing.
Other sites
Lamanai is an hour's boat ride up the New River, past crocodiles and howler monkeys, and worth a full day of its own. Cahal Pech, above San Ignacio, is small, often empty and pairs with Xunantunich. Caracol, the largest site in Belize, is too far for a day trip from the caye and needs a night on the mainland.
What to bring
Closed shoes with grip; sandals are a bad idea on El Castillo. Water and a hat. Cash for the ferry tip and craft stalls (US dollars work at two to one). A licensed guide makes both sites much better, and a booked day trip includes one.
