4 Days in Belize: A Long-Weekend Itinerary from Secret Beach

One reef day, one mainland day and two slow mornings at the villa.

Four days is enough for one day on the reef and one day on the mainland, with time left over at the villa. Add a third excursion and the trip starts to feel rushed.

Day 1: Arrive

Most flights from the US land in Belize City between late morning and mid-afternoon. The hop to San Pedro is short, and Everaldo meets you at the airstrip for the forty-minute run north to Secret Beach.

Spend the rest of the day at the pool and on the dock. Secret Beach faces west, so the water is flat and the sun sets in front of you. Snorkel off the end of the dock before dinner: the seagrass holds small rays, needlefish, juvenile snapper and the odd turtle. Eat at the villa the first night so nobody is driving a golf cart in the dark.

Day 2: Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is a cut in the barrier reef about four miles off San Pedro, protected since 1987. Expect parrotfish, moray eels, green turtles and southern rays. You don't need to be certified or a strong swimmer. Every trip also stops at Shark Ray Alley, where nurse sharks and stingrays gather in chest-deep water. The marine-park fee is added to the tour price. More in our guide to Hol Chan and the Blue Hole.

Morning trips are back by early afternoon. For dinner in town, try Elvi's Kitchen for Belizean cooking, Blue Water Grill on the beach, or The Truck Stop, a container food park on the lagoon road with a saltwater pool and live music most nights.

Day 3: The mainland

The flight from San Pedro to Belize City takes about fifteen minutes, with Tropic Air and Maya Island Air departing from around 7:00 a.m. The villa is forty minutes from the airstrip, so you leave at about 5:45 a.m. An operator meets you in Belize City with a van and you fly back in the afternoon or early evening. Book it as a package that includes flights, transport, a licensed guide, park fees and lunch. Delma and Everaldo arrange these for guests.

For fit adults: the ATM cave. Actun Tunichil Muknal is about two hours west of Belize City. You hike forty-five minutes with three river crossings, swim into the cave and spend around three hours inside, wading and climbing to a dry chamber where the Maya left more than a thousand ceramic vessels and fourteen sets of human remains between roughly 250 and 900 AD. The best known is the Crystal Maiden, a skeleton calcified to a sparkle.

Before you book ATM No cameras, phones or electronics are allowed inside, with no exceptions. Visitors are capped at 125 a day in groups of eight with licensed guides, so it sells out weeks ahead from January to April. Book it when you book your flights. The recommended minimum age is about eight. Wear closed-toe shoes and skip sunscreen and bug spray before you enter the reserve.

With children, or anyone who'd rather not swim into a cave: cave tubing and Altun Ha. Both are about an hour from Belize City. You float through the Caves Branch river system on an inner tube by headlamp, then walk the plazas of Altun Ha, where the jade head of Kinich Ahau was found. Many operators add a zip line. Our guide to Altun Ha and Xunantunich covers the ruins.

Day 4: A slow morning

Breakfast, the kayaks and paddleboards, a last swim. With a late flight and a group, Up North, about seven miles up the island, has axe throwing, a driving range and a good kitchen. Allow forty minutes to the airstrip.

Tips

Money. US dollars work everywhere. The Belize dollar is pegged at two to one, so ask which currency you're being quoted. Bring small bills.

Sun. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard. You'll be in and out of the water all day.

Tipping. Gratuity is discretionary. Guests who tip generally leave 10–20% of the total cost of the stay in cash at the end, split between Delma and Everaldo. Tour guides and boat captains are tipped separately on the day.

Staying a week? The eight-day itinerary adds Caye Caulker, a fishing day, a private charter and a day on the island by golf cart.

Common questions

Is four days long enough for Belize?

Yes, for one reef day and one mainland day. Keep the other two days for the villa.

Can you visit the Belize mainland as a day trip from Ambergris Caye?

Yes. Fly fifteen minutes to Belize City, meet your operator's van, and fly back in the afternoon or early evening. Book it as a package rather than piece by piece.

How far ahead should I book the ATM cave?

When you book your flights. It is capped at 125 visitors a day and sells out weeks ahead from January to April.
