Almost every photograph of the Great Blue Hole was taken from the air. From the water it is a darker patch of sea, so if that image is why you want to go, book the hour-long scenic flight.
What you're flying over
The Blue Hole is near the centre of Lighthouse Reef, an atoll roughly seventy kilometres offshore, inside the UNESCO-listed Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System. It is a limestone cave that formed during the ice ages, when sea levels were far lower, then flooded and collapsed as the oceans rose. Divers deep inside pass stalactites that only form in dry air. It is about a thousand feet across and more than four hundred feet deep. Jacques Cousteau brought the Calypso here in 1972 and made it famous.
The flight
Tropic Air runs the best-known tour, Maya Island Air flies a similar route, and Astrum Helicopters offers a private, unobstructed option for more money. Flights leave from San Pedro, Caye Caulker and Belize City Municipal. The operators suggest late morning to early afternoon for the best light on the water.
From San Pedro it takes about an hour, wheels-up to wheels-down. Check in about thirty minutes before departure with photo identification. Tropic Air uses three-seat or eleven-seat aircraft depending on bookings, and every passenger gets a window seat. You cross the lagoon, the barrier reef and open water, passing Turneffe Atoll, while the pilot, a certified tour guide, narrates. At Lighthouse Reef the plane circles the hole several times, usually between five hundred and a thousand feet, so both sides of the cabin get the view.
On the way you'll usually also see Turneffe Atoll's mangroves, Half Moon Caye (a natural monument with a red-footed booby colony), the line of the barrier reef and, heading home, the cut at Hol Chan. Several guests have told us the reef was the part they didn't expect.
Getting the photograph
Take the seat with the cleanest glass. Hold the lens close to the window without touching it, so the airframe's vibration stays out of the shot. Don't wear white, because light clothing reflects off the inside of the glass. Phones do fine. The co-pilot seat, where offered, is the best on the plane.
Flight, dive or snorkel
- FlyYou want the view, you have an hour and you don't dive. The right call for most visitors.
- DiveYou hold an Advanced Open Water certification or equivalent. The hole is a deep dive to around 130 feet; the two reef dives that come with the day are the prettier ones.
- SnorkelFrom the surface you see blue, not stalactites. The reefs around Lighthouse are worth the crossing; the hole itself is not a snorkel site.
- Skip itHol Chan and the reef off Ambergris have more wildlife per hour than the atoll.
The boat trip
The boat day takes about twelve hours, with a two to two-and-a-half-hour crossing each way over open water beyond the barrier reef. A typical dive day is three dives: the Blue Hole, the Half Moon Caye wall with lunch ashore among the boobies, and the Aquarium at Long Caye. Snorkel versions visit the surrounding reefs instead of the hole. Departures are early and the crossing can be rough, so take something for seasickness before you board. Divers need their certification card and logbook. The flight costs less and needs no certification, and for anyone prone to motion sickness or travelling with children it is the better choice. Fitting it into your stay
The flight leaves from San Pedro, about forty minutes from Secret Beach. Have a slow morning at the villa, drive down, fly, and you're back for a swim before dinner.
