Town, reef side, west shore

Ambergris Caye is one long island with one town. Where you stay decides your water, your noise level and how often you sit in a golf cart.

San Pedro town is where the airstrip, the water taxis, the restaurants and the nightlife are. Stay in or near town and you can walk to dinner; you also share the beach with the town, and the water in front of it is a working waterfront with boat traffic.

The reef side north of the bridge is where most resorts and many condos sit, facing the Belize Barrier Reef. The snorkelling and diving leave from here and the beaches are long. It is also the windward coast: when sargassum arrives, it arrives here, and in the worst months it can be a daily job to clear.

The west shore at Secret Beach faces the lagoon. It is calm, shallow and clear all year, with sunsets over the water and no seaweed. It is quieter and further from town — roughly forty minutes by golf cart from the airstrip — which is exactly why people who have been to the island before choose it. The Caye Caulker comparison covers the other island if you are still deciding.

Good to know

Island questions, answered

Which side of Ambergris Caye is best for a villa?

For calm, clear water, sunsets and quiet, the west shore at Secret Beach. For walking to restaurants, town. For being closest to the reef, the east side north of the bridge — with the trade-off that sargassum lands there in season.

Is Ambergris Caye sargassum-free?

The west-facing shore is; the reef side is not. Black Orchid Oasis is on the west shore, where the seaweed does not land apart from a short spell after an occasional strong storm.

How do we get to a villa on Ambergris Caye?

Fly to Belize City, take the fifteen-minute flight or the water taxi to San Pedro, then a golf cart or the Secret Beach water ferry. Everaldo meets our guests at the airstrip and guides them to the villa.

Do villas on Ambergris Caye include a chef?

Most do not; they are self-catering. Black Orchid Oasis includes a chef-prepared breakfast every day with Delma and Everaldo on site, and optional lunches, dinners and cocktails arranged before you arrive.

Is the internet good enough to work from Ambergris Caye?

At our villa, yes: Starlink plus a local island line for redundancy, solar with battery reserve and a backup generator, and two desks with wired connections. Ask any other listing the same question before you rely on it.

How many people can a villa on Ambergris Caye sleep?

Ours sleeps up to 12, children included: three king suites and a bunk room for six, with five bathrooms. That is the hard maximum; registered guests only.
