What 'Secret Beach' means now

Secret Beach is the leeward, west-facing side of Ambergris Caye, north of San Pedro: glassy shallows, sunsets over the water, and a strip of beach bars that did not exist a decade ago.

It began as a local swimming spot reached by a rough track and became the island's beach-bar destination in a few years; our history of Secret Beach tells that story. The practical result for a visitor is two very different experiences a short drive apart: the busy stretch of clubs with music, day beds and boat traffic, and the quiet shoreline north and south of it, where the private houses sit on their own sand.

The water is the reason people come. Because this shore faces west, the trade winds push sargassum onto the reef side of the island and leave this side clear — the why is here. It is shallow for a long way out, warm all year and calm enough for small children and beginner paddleboarders.

Five questions that sort the listings

Listings on Airbnb and Vrbo describe every house at Secret Beach with the same words. These five questions separate them, and the answers are rarely in the headline.

AskWhy it mattersBlack Orchid Oasis
Is it on the west-facing shore, directly on the water?Only the west shore is reliably calm and sargassum-free; 'near Secret Beach' can mean a lagoon lot or a canal.Yes: private beach, private dock, saltwater pool facing the sunset.
Is anyone on site? Most houses here are self-catering: you shop, cook, clean and organise every boat yourself.Delma (chef) and Everaldo (bar, grounds, transfers) on site every day. Breakfast included.
One house or several units?Groups in condo buildings share pools and split across floors; one kitchen and one table keep a group together. One villa, one great room, a table for twelve, one pool, one dock.
What happens when the power or internet drops?Secret Beach is at the end of the grid and the road; outages are normal on the island.Solar with battery reserve and a backup generator; Starlink plus a local island line.
How do you actually get there?Forty-odd minutes by golf cart from the airstrip; nobody should figure that out at 4 p.m. after two flights.Everaldo meets you at the airstrip and guides you in; the water ferry is the no-driving option.

Good to know

Secret Beach questions, answered

Is Secret Beach a good place to stay, or just to visit for the day?

Both. Day visitors come for the beach clubs. Staying means the water at dawn and dusk with nobody on it, sunsets from your own deck, and a quiet you do not get on the reef side or in town. The trade-off is distance: everything is a golf-cart ride.

Is the water at Secret Beach really sargassum-free?

Yes. The west-facing shore does not receive the seaweed that lands on the reef side; the water stays clear and swimmable year-round. The one exception is an occasional strong storm, which can push some sea grass onto this shore for a short spell.

How far is Secret Beach from San Pedro and the airstrip?

About forty minutes by golf cart on the road north, or the Secret Beach water ferry from town. Everaldo meets guests at the airstrip and guides them in.

Do we need a golf cart at Secret Beach?

Yes; the island runs on them and the villa does not provide one. Guests rent their own, roughly $35–75 USD a day, license required. We recommend MTK (+501 608-6336).

Are there restaurants at Secret Beach?

A strip of beach clubs and restaurants fifteen minutes' walk along the shore, and San Pedro's restaurants in town. Our Secret Beach dining guide covers both; Delma covers the nights you stay in.

What makes Black Orchid Oasis different from other Secret Beach villas?

It is directly on the west-facing water with its own beach, dock and saltwater pool; a chef and bartender are on site every day with breakfast included; the house sleeps twelve in four sea-view suites with five bathrooms; and it runs on solar with battery, generator and two internet lines, so the island's outages do not reach you.
